Tool Overview

Blocks provide additional tools and features to your course. Moodle enables you to add more functionality to your course by adding blocks to the course front-page.

The blocks can be added from the main side menu, which only appears when clicking on ‘Turn editing on’.

  • Select a block from the block list. The selected block will appear at the bottom the left column of the home page.
  • The block can be moved as needed.

More on Moodle Blocks can be found HERE.

Course completion status block

The course completion status block shows what has been done towards completing the course. The student and facilitator will both see this block. The "More details" link will lead to a more detailed report.

Facilitator view of Course completion status block

This block shows the status for each student. It is also the place where the teacher (or others) can mark the course as complete.

Note: The course completion status block will only appear if completion tracking is enabled in the course and then criteria set for course completion.

Student view of Course completion status block

The student can see their progress in the course by looking at the content of the block or clicking on the "More details" link to see a report. The report can have some interactive elements in the form of check boxes for the student and facilitator.

The student, if required, can mark an activity as completed on the course's homepage.

Completion Progress Block

The Completion Progress Block gives students a visual indication of their progress through a course.

To display completion progress, completion tracking must be enabled in the course and set up for at least one activity or resource.

Blocks are colour-coded to indicate the completion status so that students can quickly see what they have and have not completed/viewed.

  • Blue:                   Not complete and not yet due
  • Yellow:               Submitted but incomplete
  • Green:                Completed
  • Red:                     Not completed and overdue

When blocks in the bar are hovered over, the activity name and status appears with a hyperlink to the activity.

  • The Completion Progress is a time-management tool for students.
  • It visually shows what activities/resources a student is supposed to interact with in a course.
  • The block relies on completion settings of activities/resources in the course and when they should be completed by.
  • Ordering can be based on expected completion times or on the ordering of activities in the course.
  • There is an Overview page allowing teachers to see the progress of all students in a class, which is helpful for finding students at risk.

  • Adding the Completion Progress block to the Dashboard shows users a combined view of their progress from all courses they are enrolled in (where the block is set up)

The facilitator view of the Completion Progress Block includes a link to the Overview page, which allows you to view the progress bars of all students.

You can record notes for individual students (e.g. extensions or exemptions granted) or send messages to individual students or groups of students directly (e.g. following up after missed deadlines). Users can be selected, either manually or in bulk with the checkboxes beside the students’ name.
